‘A COUPLE OF YOUR VERY BEST’ SERVES UP A GENEROUS HELPING OF LANCASHIRE HUMOUR
Jerry’s cheerful new song proves that sometimes the most important decision of the day is which pie to choose
There are men who enter a bakery knowing precisely what they want.
Jerry is not one of them.
The latest song from Accrington author and songwriter Gabriel Undici’s Mind The Trams Songbook returns listeners to the warmth, bustle and irresistible temptations of Lockwood’s Bakery in Oswaldtwistle.
A Couple of Your Very Best belongs to Jerry — a young man of considerable size, considerable appetite and considerably less ability to make a decision when confronted by a counter filled with pies.
What begins as an apparently simple purchase soon becomes a matter requiring careful thought, sound judgement…
…and possibly another pie.
CHOICES. TOO MANY CHOICES.
Fresh bread.
Ginger cakes.
Gooseberry pies.
French fancies.
Custard pies.
And, most dangerously of all…
the cheese pies.
For most customers, choosing something for lunch presents little difficulty.
For Jerry, it is practically a test of character.
A Couple of Your Very Best captures one of the lighter sides of Mind The Trams, celebrating the humour found in everyday conversations and the familiar characters who could transform an ordinary trip to the bakery into an event remembered for years.
A PIE BEST SERVED WARM
Regular readers may be advised that Jerry has developed his own method for ensuring a cheese pie reaches the correct temperature.
It involves a waistcoat pocket.
The management of Lockwood’s Bakery cannot recommend this procedure.
Neither, following subsequent events, can Jerry.
Nevertheless, his determination to enjoy one of Lockwood’s finest remains undiminished.
Some men learn from experience.
Others order another.
THE LAUGHTER BEFORE EVERYTHING CHANGED
Beneath its humour, A Couple of Your Very Best has another purpose within the twenty-song Mind The Trams Songbook.
These are the ordinary days worth remembering.
Friends laughing.
Customers talking.
A bakery bell ringing.
Someone taking far too long to choose his lunch.
Soon enough, the world outside Lockwood’s will become more serious.
For now, however, there are pies to consider.
And Jerry intends to consider every one of them.
FROM LOCKWOOD’S TO THE STAGE
Written by Gabriel Undici, A Couple of Your Very Best forms part of the twenty original songs inspired by the novel Mind The Trams, set among the people and streets of Oswaldtwistle and Accrington in 1939.
Together, the songs are forming the foundations of a developing Lancashire musical — one built not only upon love, loss and approaching war, but upon the humour and friendship that made ordinary communities extraordinary.
