Philomena’s Carbolic Soap
Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness!
There was a time when the smell of carbolic soap was as familiar as the sound of a factory whistle.
Across Lancashire in the 1930s, old-fashioned soap was part of everyday life. From mill workers returning home after a long shift to school washrooms, hospitals and institutions, washing was a practical necessity rather than a luxury.
And nobody understood the importance of cleanliness quite like Sister Mary Philomena.
A Soap With a Story
Inspired by the characters and historical setting of Mind The Trams, the Lancashire novel by Gabriel Undici, Philomena’s Carbolic Soap brings a little of that bygone world back to life.
With its distinctive vintage-style packaging, traditional lettering and unmistakably stern inspiration, Philomena’s celebrates the everyday household products remembered by generations of British families.
Carbolic soap holds a particular place in British social history, associated with hardworking households, institutional washrooms and the unmistakable scent of an earlier age.
Our ambition is to revive that sense of nostalgia through a product inspired by the sights, smells and stories of 1930s Lancashire.
From the World of Mind The Trams
Philomena’s Carbolic Soap forms part of a growing collection of vintage-inspired Lancashire products, alongside Mo’s Donkey Stone and Ada’s Dolly Blue.
Each product begins with a story, a character or a forgotten tradition.
And each offers another glimpse into the world of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, in 1939.
