The release of the Mind The Trams Songbook marks an exciting new chapter for Lancashire author and songwriter Gabriel Undici. Inspired by the novel Mind The Trams, the collection features twenty original songs that bring the fictional mill town of 1939 Oswaldtwistle to life.
Rather than simply accompanying the novel, each song tells part of the story, giving a voice to the characters who inhabit Lockwood’s Bakery, St George’s Ballroom and the cobbled streets of Lancashire. Themes of love, friendship, community and wartime sacrifice weave through the music, creating an experience that sits somewhere between a soundtrack and the beginnings of a stage musical.
From the emotional depth of Stone Fathers and A Father’s Song to the humour of A Couple of Your Very Best and Over the Fence, the Songbook reflects both the joy and heartbreak of ordinary people living through extraordinary times.
The project is already developing into a larger creative world, with vintage 1930s promotional posters, cinematic short films and plans for a future musical adaptation.
