BEFORE THE MUSIC TURNED
Robert’s reflective new song looks back upon love, friendship and the ordinary moments nobody knew they were about to lose
There must always be a last ordinary day.
A final morning when the bakery opens as usual. A last tram journey taken without thinking about it. A final evening when young people dance, laugh and make plans for a future they simply assume will arrive.
Nobody recognises these moments when they are living them.
Only afterwards.
“Before The Music Turned,” one of the most reflective songs from Gabriel Undici’s Mind The Trams musical project, looks back upon Oswaldtwistle and Accrington in 1939 through the eyes of Robert — the quiet young man whose thoughts and unspoken feelings run like a thread through the story.
It is not a song about war.
It is about the world immediately before it.
ROBERT REMEMBERS
Robert has never been the loudest voice in the room.
Where others speak, he watches.
Where others dance, he remembers.
And where others might declare their feelings easily, Robert has spent much of his life wondering whether tomorrow might provide a better opportunity.
In Before The Music Turned, tomorrow suddenly feels less certain.
The song recalls bakery windows glowing on dark Lancashire mornings, familiar faces waiting for trams, friends exchanging insults and laughter, dance cards being filled and young men believing they have all the time in the world.
Nothing remarkable.
And that is precisely the point.
WHEN ORDINARY BECOMES PRECIOUS
Much of Mind The Trams is rooted in the everyday life of Oswaldtwistle, Accrington and the surrounding Lancashire mill towns — communities built around work, family, friendship and the countless small rituals that rarely find their way into history books.
Before The Music Turned asks the listener to consider how precious those ordinary things become once they are gone.
A familiar voice.
A particular street.
Someone standing behind a bakery counter.
The sound of a tram approaching.
A dance you thought you could always have another time.
Robert remembers them because, eventually, remembering is all that remains.
THE MUSIC HASN’T CHANGED — YET
Perhaps the most affecting thing about the song is its restraint.
There are no battlefields here.
No speeches.
No great historical declarations.
Instead, we remain for a few minutes in Lancashire in 1939, surrounded by people who do not yet realise they are living through the closing bars of one part of their lives.
The orchestra is still playing.
The ballroom lights are still glowing.
Doris is still there.
And Robert still has time to tell her.
Or at least…
he thinks he does.
THE HERALD VERDICT
★★★★★
“A SONG ABOUT THE MOMENT BEFORE A MEMORY BECOMES A MEMORY.”
Quiet, deeply nostalgic and beautifully restrained. Before The Music Turned finds its emotion not in what happened next — but in everything that was still there before it did.
